事實上，火箭曾希望能一口氣網羅霍華和保羅(Chris Paul)，但現保羅已答應續留快艇，所以火箭如想滿足霍華願望，將可能鎖定「鷹王」史密斯(Josh Smith)，但《休士頓紀事報》分析，如火箭要直接從自由市場延攬2名A咖球星，勢必面臨巨大薪資壓力，有可能需透過「先簽後換」方式進行。
