For the third consecutive year, AMOLED capex at South Korea-based Samsung Display will exceed LCD panel capex in 2013. Samsung Display has been investing in OLED production and increasingly adopting domestic OLED equipment. This is likely to benefit South Korea-based OLED equipment firms.
According to Digitimes Research, in 2012, the major South Korea-based OLED equipment partners of Samsung Display were Advanced Process Systems (AP Systems), SFA Engineering (SFA), ICD, Tera Semicon, SNU Precision, Semes, and Wonik IPS. With the exception of ICD, the Samsung Group holds shares in the other six OLED equipment firms.
In 2012, AP Systems saw display equipment revenues grow 11.9% on year to KRW201.4 billion (US$178 million). The firm has seen annual revenue growth for four consecutive years. In addition, at the end of 2012, total orders of display equipment sets that had yet to be delivered were equivalent to KRW111.2 billion, higher than KRW85.4 billion at the end of 2011. Hence, the firm is expected to see revenue growth in 2013.
However, in 2012, SFA saw display equipment revenues show a sequential decrease of 32.6% to KRW91.0 billion. ICD also saw revenues in 2012 decrease 43.3% on year to KRW81.2 billion compared to 2011. Tera Semicon, SNU Precision, Semes, and Wonik IPS all showed sequential revenue decreases in 2012.
The reason for the revenue decline among OLED equipment firms is that Samsung Display procured equipment sets for its 5.5G (1,300 by 1,500mm) AMOLED panel A2 P3 production line located in the South Chungcheong Province, South Korea, in the fourth quarter of 2011 for the third phase of the project. The firm began consolidation after the fourth quarter of 2011, hence equipment procurement for the fourth phase of the project occurred one year later, in fourth-quarter 2012. This means the equipment firms received limited orders in 2012, causing revenues to show sequential declines.
In 2013, Samsung Display plans to increase total capex from KRW5 trillion in 2012 to KRW8 trillion, and from the end of 2012 the firm began procuring equipment sets for its AMOLED panel A2 P3 production line in South Korea and LCD production line in Suzhou, China. Digitimes Research believes the South Korea-based display equipment partners of Samsung Display will see sequential growth in 2013 revenues.
