馬來西亞在1981年2月出版了《簡化漢字總表》，收錄了與大陸完全一致的2238個簡化字。新加坡在1969年推出自己的《簡體字表》，新馬兩地到1974年採用中國大陸的簡化字頒布《簡體字總表》正式使用簡體字。

繁體字在簡化字普及前曾經是漢字在海外華人圈中主流，唐人街上的商業招貼及中文媒體、漢語教學曾一律使用繁體字。環球時報引述，中國大陸改革開放以前，美國的漢語教學一直延續著繁體字的傳統。改革開放後，第一批大陸留美博士畢業，他們開始編寫簡化字的中文教材。截止2006年，美國2300多所高中開辦中文「先修課程」，採用簡化字的比率已有一半。
