白宮兌現歐巴馬三年前的綠化承諾，開始安裝太陽能板，改善整棟建築的能源效率。除了太陽能板，白宮還要裝設新的溫度調節器和變速電扇。官員說，白宮裝太陽能板，有助證明歷史建築也能使用太陽能，提升能源效率。2010年，當時的能源部長朱棣文宣布，白宮要裝太陽能板，以鼓勵美國民眾採用綠色發電科技。不過，這不是白宮第一次裝太陽能板，卡特在1979年裝過，只用了七年，就被大砍替代能源研究的雷根拆了。
