【綜合報導】美國國會參眾兩院在10月1日零時的新會計年度開始前，未能就新年度臨時預算案達成共識，自台灣時間中午12時起，包括醫療、移民、執法等部門，都有部份單位暫停運作。這是17年來美國政府首度關門，80萬聯邦公務員被迫放無薪假，剛展現復甦跡象的美國經濟也面臨打擊。

美國白宮預算管理局局長柏威爾（Sylvia Mathews Burwell），在美國時間9月30日午夜前10分鐘下令聯邦機構停止運作。10月1日起，支領聯邦經費的醫療機構不能收治新病患，醫療諮詢熱線也停止服務。疾病防治中心（CDC）大幅降低工作量；司法部將暫停審理大部份民事案件；包括優勝美地國家公園、紐約自由女神像等逾350間國家公園及博物館都關門不營業。
