美國政府將公開拍賣，國內數座歷史悠久，但殘破不堪的燈塔，最低起標價只要1美元，不過根據美國2000年國家歷史燈塔保護法規定(The National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act of 2000)，標到的買家必須負責整修燈塔，到符合安全規範為止，而且還要定期維修保養。
 
其中這座蓋於1886年，位於康州的賽布魯克防波堤燈塔(Saybrook Breakwater Light)，起標價只要1美元，麻煩的是要進入燈塔，只能靠水路，而且拍賣後燈塔還是要「照常營業」，另一個鄰近長島(Long Island)北端的東點燈塔(Orient Point Lighthouse)，明天開始拍賣，起標價則是1萬美元，而且還附有碼頭，這可不是每座燈塔都有的。
 
當然也有較豪華的高價燈塔，位於緬因州的馬納納島信號站(Manana Island Sound Signal Station)，其實不是燈塔，但它的作用同樣也是引領航海員，起標價15萬4千美元，買下信號站，周圍的木板道和碼頭也一併贈送。
 
由於這些燈塔年久失修，逐漸腐爛龜裂，美國政府表示希望能為燈塔找到好主人，讓它們繼續聳立在大海中。
